The life and Times of the Camross Poet "Patrick Ryan"
The Poets Cottage is our local landmark, it lies at the centre of Camross village and features in all our village photos.
The cottage was designed to replicate a traditional Laois thatched cottage and represent the home of the Poet- Patrick Ryan who lived in Camross from 1750 - 1825.
We used a Creative Ireland Community Project to celebrate the life and times of the Poet - “Patrick Ryan”.
We have commissioned Peter Dooley, a Camross artist renowned for his portraits to create a portrait of the Poet which will be hung in the Poets Cottage and seen by all its visitors.
During Heritage Week 2024 we will host a reception to launch the portrait, recite his poetry, and celebrate with music and conversation.
The Poets Cottage is currently a community building and there are plans in place to renovate and develop its tourism potential. It was originally built as a Millenium Heritage Project by the local Fas team.
