The history of the city has been marked by centuries of mining which has attracted a strong immigration from the surrounding regions. Also a place of refuge because of the ideas of tolerance of feudal lords ruling over the southern part of the city, the Ribeaupierre, Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines has played a significant role in the history of Protestantism - it is in particular, in 1693, the place of the Amish schism. Curiously, the city remained divided between the Duchy of Lorraine and the seigneury of Ribeaupierre for 4 centuries (from 1381 to 1789), until the French Revolution put an end to the feudal system.
