This is how women lived in the Middle Ages
This is how women lived in the Middle Ages
Lecture by Maëlle Thomas-Bourneuf, author and speaker
From the eleventh to the fifteenth century, what was the condition of women who, after the peril of early childhood, reach adulthood and more if «God gives her life»? It was divided according to the diversity of ages and social conditions, their status, according to the place occupied in civil or religious society, in relation to the primary role of motherhood, when they did not die in childbirth obviously. Whether they lived in the countryside or in the city, women were not reduced to domestic life: they were involved in social life; none was «mother at home», all worked. And their fate was tied to the love they were given... or not. Today’s historians have dusted off the false image inherited from the 19th century. The woman in the Middle Ages is much closer to us and more modern than we think.
