Tidy Towns Celebrations
Belcarra Community Council celebrates the long history of Tidy Towns in Belcarra on Saturday 17th August..
The event consists of a photographic exhibition telling the story of Belcarra Tidy Town through the years. A local historian will also give a talk on how Belcarra Tidy Towns developed over the years - its achievements and developments and awards won.
Belcarra Tidy Towns was established in 1962 by 2 local members of the ICA (Irish Country Women's Association). The initial aim was to carry out small upgrades and enhancements of the local area. Little did the organisers think back then, that Belcarra Tidy Towns could achieve so much.
Belcarra village has won the county Tidy Towns Award on 14 occasions and consequently attracts many tourists.
Belcarra received its first County award for the tidiest Village in Mayo in 1977.
Aims
To create the opportunities for a quality of life and sense of community for the people in the area now and for future generations.
To sustain and develop the people, the resources and the environment.
To create and foster employment and economic opportunities through the proper utilisation of these resources.
To promote and assist the economic and socio-cultural development of the area.
To promote the area generally as a place to live, work and visit and to build on the success.
Activities
Painting, letter control, weed control, planting, heritage preservation, wildlife habitat development and street furniture.
