Trimontium Roman Fort
7 September 2025 (12:00 - 16:30) The Trimontium Fort is the largest Roman fort site north of Hadrian’s Wall. Established during the first invasion by the Roman’s around 80CE, it was a cavalry fort and housed up to 2000 soldiers. The Fort site was extensively excavated between 1905-1910 by local archaeologist James Curle and produced a wealth of Roman artefacts which form a substantial part of the National Roman collection. There are no visible remains at the fort but lots of clues as to its fascinating history. Trimontium volunteers will be running short walks of the fort site throughout the day, giving visitors a great overview of the story of Trimontium and pointing out clues left in the landscape today. We will also have a working ballista on site and you can watch this ancient weapon’s awesome firepower. You can also enjoy the festivities in the village of Newstead, as part of Newstead Community's SunDials Festival. Guided walks will leave from the entrance to the Fort Site in Newstead every half hour from Noon until 4pm. Walks last 30 minutes. The Fort Site is accessible along a flat road. There are no toilet facilities at the site.
