Granite House at 177 Trongate is an 1925 factory building that has been repurposed into artist studios. We will be showing people around the second floor known as Trongate 2 as the entrance is on the Trongate side. This open studio is being hosted by the artists who use that floor.
We will be holding 4 bookable tours a day on Saturday 20/09 and Sunday 21/09 of the open studios. Some of the artists will be there to speak about their work, provide insights and answer questions.
Overview
The building itself is a listed building from 1925 that was built as a warehouse.
Frank Burnet and Boston architects, 1923-1929. Warehouses and shops occupying large corner site, 5-storey with sunken basement, 9-bay elevation to Trongate, canted bay across angle to Stockwell Street. 21-bay elevation to Stockwell Street arranged 8-8-5; 6-bay angled elevation to Osborne Street. Polished pink granite ground, otherwise walling red polished sandstone, channelled to 1st. Steel frame with reinforced concrete floors, metal framed windows, flat roof.
All elevations similarly detailed that to Osborne Street plainer. To 2nd, 3rd and 4th windows flanked by giant pilasters, these support deep cornice over 4th with cast-iron balconies to 5th. All windows metal- framed tripartites with small-pane (usually 15-pane) glazing. Parapet over 5th, stepped up at end bays. Canted angle bay with attic storey and octagonal copper dome.
Main entrance to Trongate (No 177) at centre. Entrance bay recessed and narrower, central granite doorway with decorative consoles supporting seated statues flanking festooned oculus. Osborne Street elevation similarly detailed but plainer without the giant order pilasters.
177 has a wheelchair left and then on the second floor it has a disabled toilet.
