Once upon a time, the castle of Ardelay
800 YEARS OF HISTORY The foundation of Ardelay Castle dates back to the 12th century, with the elevation of an artificial mound surrounded by moats and a circular stone enclosure, shell-keep type. With its imposing 15th century keep and shooting chamber, it is one of the examples of defensive and military architecture in the region. Restored in the 20th century by the City of Herbaria, the castle was the possession of several illustrious families such as the De Vivonne or Les Herbiers, from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. ART AT THE HEART OF HERITAGE The Château d'Ardelay offers several temporary exhibitions a year on visual arts. Sculpture, photography, painting… , artists are invited to exhibit their works in an authentic and historic place. A place of life and creative expression, the castle also hosts every year, the Salon des Artistes, bringing together thirty artists from all over France.
