Overview

Join us at Carrowmore megalithic complex for an hour-long musical recital on the Uilleann pipes by OPW guide Martin Byrne. The uilleann pipes, which have been awarded UNESCO status, are Ireland’s only native instrument, and have a long tradition of association with megalithic monuments, in particular stone circles.

Many Irish tunes, such as the Gold Ring, are believed to have come from the Little People, and been given as gifts to humans. A number of stone circles, such as the Piper’s Stones in County Wicklow are believed to have been created when pipers were turned to stone for the transgression of playing music for dancers on Sundays.

Martin will play a selection of musical pieces and relate the stories and folk tales behind the specific tunes. The Uilleann piping recital will take place out doors amongst the early neolithic passage-graves at Carrowmore, in the heart of the stunning Sligo landscape.
