Overview

Since 1972, the Ulster Museum has provided a platform for bold new perspectives and has shone a light on our shared treasures, making space for diverse voices to be heard. The Ulster Museum is home to Northern Ireland’s rich collection of art, history and natural sciences, all set within the beautiful surroundings of Belfast’s Botanic Gardens, bringing everything from dinosaurs to Da Vincis for everyone to enjoy. It is a place to inspire wonder, encourage creativity and to understand the importance of our shared humanity. When visiting the museum you can come face-to-face with dinosaurs, meteorites and Spanish sailors, and discover new perspectives about Ancient Ireland, inclusive global histories, the Troubles, and whatever the future may hold. But how did this unique and fascinating place become the Ulster Museum we know today? And what does the future look like for the Ulster Museum? To help explore the Ulster Museums unique history, we’ll be running some special talks for European Heritage Open Day, to learn more about the buildings fascinating origin story, architecture and journey of change. We will also be running three separate guided highlights tours, each focussing on a different area of our diverse history, nature and art collections. Each of these guided tours will explore some of the museums most famous objects and collection items, demonstrating how our collections encourage you to discover the present, think about our past and what this may mean for our future.  The Ulster Museum History talk is a free bookable event that will run on both the 9th and 10th of September from 10:30am. The talk will last approx. 45 minutes.

Our History, Nature and Art tours are also free events and can be individually booked. They will take place on 9th and 10th of September at 12:00 (History), 13:20 (Nature) and 14:40 (Art).
