Overview

Ballinascarthy village in West Cork is rich in heritage with the railway era of 1886 to 1961 being top of the list. We are unveiling a Timeline of Ballinascarthy Railway Junction depicting life; social, industrial and commercial business, all conducted through rail. Our timeline is a snapshot of times when people had little other mode of transport so whether it was attending a GAA match, family day out to the seaside, regatta, visiting relatives or transporting cattle, beet, sand, eggs, fish to and fro, it was all done by train. We are also launching a booklet containing many interesting photos, stories, tickets, timetables and maps, all tracking the history of the train in Ballinascarthy and surrounding areas. We aim to very much keep alive the fantastic memories of the train going through our tiny village, back then, the hub of connectivity, networking, routing and re-routing. It has left a lasting imprint on our community, encapsulating the very soul of life from 1886 to 1961. We have extracted some beautifully coloured memories from black and white snaps; therefore creating a symphony of information on the timeline for generations to come. This rich tapestry of tracking the train stories can now be seen through the lens of people today, so both the present and the past can travel along together on our timeline journey. Tá fáilte roimh gach aon duine ar an lá specialta seo in mBaile na Scairte.
