Villa Ruys is fraai gelegen aan de rand van het park van De Paauw. Vanuit het huis heeft men een weids uitzicht op het weiland aan de Paauwlaan. De villa is gebouwd in 1914-1916 voor Daniël Ruys (1873-1952), directeur van de Rotterdamse Lloyd, een maatschappij die een scheepvaartverbinding met Nederlands-Indië (Indonesië) onderhield. Ruys trouwde in 1920 met Zonda freiin von Haertl (1897-1980), een huwelijk dat kinderloos bleef. Hun familiewapens zijn in steen uitgehouwen boven de entree van de villa.
Ontwerper van de villa was de Rotterdamse architect L.J. Zaaijer. Villa Ruys is gebouwd in de Nieuw Historiserende stijl, geïnspireerd op het Hollands Classicisme uit de zeventiende eeuw en de Engelse landhuisstijl. Bij de hoofdingang van het terrein werd een huis voor de tuinbaas gebouwd, evenals een toegangsbrug over de sloot langs de Paauwlaan. Schuin achter het huis verrees een koetshuis met paardenboxen, auto-opstelplaatsen en een bovenwoning.
De villa Ruys verrees op een afgesplitst gedeelte van het landgoed De Paauw. Dit landgoed was tot zijn dood in 1881 bewoond door prins Frederik der Nederlanden (zoon van koning Willem I). Zijn dochter verkocht De Paauw, waarna het landgoed werd verkaveld in kleinere stukken waarop nieuwe landhuizen zoals Villa Ruys en De Pauwhof werden gebouwd. Bij villa Ruys hoorde ook het park achter huize De Paauw. Dit park werd in 1955 door de gemeente van de erven Ruys gekocht en opengesteld voor het publiek.
Daniël Ruys was een groot plantenliefhebber. Tussen de villa en de Prinsenweg liet hij een grote ommuurde moestuin aanleggen. Hier stonden een oranjerie en kassen (later afgebroken) en een bloembinderij. In de kassen groeiden onder andere bijzondere varens, cactussen en vetplanten. Zeven man personeel en een leerling verzorgden in de jaren dertig de tuinen. De tuinbaas zorgde ervoor dat het hele jaar bloemen, groeten en fruit voor het echtpaar Ruys beschikbaar waren.
In 1955 werden de villa, het park en de tuinen verkocht aan de gemeente Wassenaar. Deze verhuurde het huis aan Brazilië om te gebruiken als ambtswoning voor de Braziliaanse ambassadeur. In 1966 kocht Brazilië de villa die ook nu nog als ambtswoning in gebruik is. De moestuin bleef eigendom van de gemeente. Een deel ervan, met de voormalige bloembinderij, wordt verhuurd aan een scoutinggroep, de rest is in gebruik als moestuin en boomgaard.

Villa Ruys
Villa Ruys is beautifully situated on the edge of De Paauw Park. The house offers a panoramic view of the meadow along Paauwlaan. The villa was built between 1914 and 1916 for Daniël Ruys (1873-1952), director of Rotterdam Lloyd, a company that maintained a shipping connection with the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). Ruys married Zonda freiin von Haertl (1897-1980) in 1920, a marriage that remained childless. Their family crests are carved in stone above the villa’s entrance.
The villa was designed by Rotterdam architect L.J. Zaaijer. Villa Ruys was built in the Neo-Historic style, inspired by 17th-century Dutch Classicism and the English country house style. At the main entrance to the grounds, a house for the head gardener was built, as well as an access bridge over the ditch along Paauwlaan. Diagonally behind the house, a coach house with horse stalls, parking spaces for cars, and an upstairs apartment was constructed.
Villa Ruys was built on a separate section of the De Paauw estate. This estate was occupied by Prince Frederik of the Netherlands (son of King William I) until his death in 1881. His daughter sold De Paauw, after which the estate was subdivided into smaller plots on which new country houses, such as Villa Ruys and De Pauwhof, were built. Villa Ruys also included the park behind De Paauw. This park was purchased from the Ruys estate by the municipality in 1955 and opened to the public.
Daniël Ruys was a great plant lover. He commissioned a large walled vegetable garden between the villa and Prinsenweg. This included an orangery and greenhouses (later demolished), as well as a flower shop. The greenhouses housed unusual ferns, cacti, and succulents, among other plants. Seven staff members and an apprentice tended the gardens in the 1930s. The head gardener ensured that flowers, vegetables, and fruit were available year-round for the Ruys couple.
In 1955, the villa, the park, and the gardens were sold to the municipality of Wassenaar. They then leased the house to Brazil for use as an official residence for the Brazilian ambassador. In 1966, Brazil purchased the villa, which remains its official residence. The vegetable garden remained the property of the municipality. Part of it, including the former flower shop, is leased to a scouting group; the rest is used as a vegetable garden and orchard.
