Overview

The Royal Staircase of Aragon in Bonifacio, classified as a historical monument and picturesque site of Corsica according to its legend, was dug by hand in one night by the troops of the King of Aragon in 1420. In reality, it is to access the Saint-Barthélemy well, a freshwater well, that this staircase was actually dug. Unfortunately, the well is no longer in use today and the cave hosting it is closed to the public. Composed of 189 steps all as irregular as each other, it is by descending them that you will remain amazed in front of a set of incredible views: 180° on the sea, Sardinia and the cliffs. Arrived at the bottom, you will be just a few meters above the sea in a path dug into the cliff and you will follow a turquoise blue water. The children who manage to climb these 189 steps have the privilege of receiving a diploma as a reward for their courage! A unique experience to live in the Mediterranean that combines physical challenge and secular history! The visit to this site requires a good physical capacity and compliance with safety regulations. Please take note of the rules for visiting the King’s Aragon Staircase before your visit. Access to the staircase is only reserved for people with closed and flat shoes (prohibited: flip-flops, slippers and heeled shoes). A helmet is lent for the smooth running of the visit.
