Visit an 1840s Merchant Shop-House at 18 Ormond Quay Upper
Visit 18 Ormond Quay Upper, a traditional Dublin 1840s merchant shop-house saved and restored by Dublin Civic Trust. This demonstration of best conservation practice secured the prestigious Europa Nostra Award/European Heritage Award 2021 for reviving over-the-shop living while respecting the building's special character. Traditional skills were revived in conserving this typical example of a Dublin street building, including traditional Irish wigged pointing to the brickwork, stone indent repairs, architectural joinery and lime plastering. The magnificent blind-arcaded granite shopfront was restored and internal cornices were reinstated with the aid of a Community Grant from The Heritage Council, while other works were supported by the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, the Apollo Foundation and the Irish Georgian Society. Open all day from 11am to 7pm, take a self-guided tour of the traditionally decorated upper floor rooms hung with authentic wallpapers and furnished with mahogany furniture of the mid-19th century. Visitors will learn about the building's history and its restoration by Dublin Civic Trust in the shop exhibition. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Two tours will also run at 12pm and 3pm, lasting one hour, operated on a first-come basis. No booking is required for self-guided or guided visits. Admission fee: €5 to support the work of Dublin Civic Trust We look forward to welcoming you!
