Overview

The members of the association of the Friends of the Castle and the Terroir of Esnes, propose you to visit the castle of Esnes, this jewel of the Cambresian heritage, rare trace of our local history. This castle is an old medieval fortress, probably dating from the late 13th century, deeply reworked in the 15th, then transformed into a hunting lodge in the 17th to become a farm after the revolution and even a prison during the First World War. With our guides, volunteers and enthusiasts, you will discover the site, its history and that of the inhabitants of our region, its geology and its location so particular. Once past the moat and the remains of its old drawbridge, you are in the inner courtyard. You will admire the 17th century facade of the main building «the Beaufremetz wing» typical of the Renaissance and you will notice that each owner has since respected the harmony of the constructions of his predecessors.
