Overview

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the observatory of Besançon opens its doors. Besançon, in the second half of the 19th century, experienced an expansion of horological activity which gave it the title of watchmaking capital. It is in this context that the astronomical, meteorological and chronometric observatory was built in 1884. Come and discover its meridian lunette as well as the astrograph during guided tours. You can also discover the library and visit the observatory park. Two temporary exhibitions have been designed on the occasion of the observatory’s anniversary: The Travels of Mr. Gruey and Cistierna 1905, a scientific mission at the beginning of the 20th century. These exhibitions are visible in the meridian building. Guided tours are by reservation only.
