Overview

The primitive temple was first mentioned in 1565 in a compoix dated 1581, and was cited in another compoix erected in 1643 where it is still cited before its destruction in the wars of religion. On July 12, 1822, Prosper Renaux, architect of the City of Alès, drew up an estimate for the construction of the new Temple, in response to the needs of the inhabitants of the commune who wanted a simple temple to protect themselves from the weather and fulfill their religious duty. They opened a voluntary subscription that produced a sum of more than 4,000 francs in a short time, sufficient to undertake the project. The Temple was built on the ruins of the ancient, the foundations being laid on the living rock, presumed to be one meter below the current ground. The main façade overlooks the main road.
