Overview

The first mention of the site of Mur de Barrez appears in the 10th century: a Carolingian farmhouse is attested below the current site of the castle dating from the 11th century. Property of the viscounts of Carlat, the city was twice in the hands of the English (in 1373 and 1418) during the Hundred Years' War before being attacked by the Calvinists from 1574 to 1590\\. The city then offered a rather rich face: to the many fairs attracting merchants, merchants and peasants of Carladez, but also of Rouergue and Auvergne, In addition, there were activities related to the presence of a number of religious institutions and a local petty bourgeoisie of lawyers and notaries. The history of Mur-de-barrez is closely linked to that of Monaco. This relationship dates back to 1643, when Carladez County came under Monegasque rule, until 1791\\. The Tower of Monaco, symbol of the city, all in black basalt, is an obligatory passage to access the Grand Rue and the old town.
