Overview
⛪ Guided tours of the Saint-Paul-la-Coste church
A millenary building in the heart of the Cévennes
The association Mémoire et Patrimoine offers guided tours of this iconic church: at 11am and 3pm, and on request throughout the day. Mentioned since 1156 as a benefit of the abbey of Cendras (according to a bull of pope Adrien IV), the church has survived the centuries:- Partially destroyed in 1621,
- Burned in 1702 by the Camisards,
- Restored in 1674 by the priest Pierre Daniou,
- Rebuilt in 1734 by the prior Descamps.
- That same year 1702, it hosts a garrison of thirty dragons. Oriented to the east, it rests on an ancient tower, probably an old watchtower, today surmounted by the bell tower. 🎖️ Between 1990 and 2025, the church benefited from an extensive restoration program, greeted by:
- Two letters of support from Pope Francis (2018 and 2021)
- The Heritage Ribbon Award in 2020 In 2025, the completion of the restoration of the sacristy marks the end of more than 30 years of continuous safeguarding efforts. A visit rich in history, memory... and hope!
