Los romanos y, más tarde, los árabes se beneficiaron de las curativas aguas sulfurosas del municipio, dándoles el nombre de “Karr-al-krak”, que significa “limpieza de impurezas”. Sin embargo el gran esplendor se alcanzaría con la inauguración de Balneario en 1855, símbolo del municipio de Carratraca (actualmente cerrado al público) y centro de la actividad económica y social de la localidad. Alrededor del balneario crecieron otras actividades dedicadas al ocio como novilladas que se celebraban en la plaza del pueblo, pero la afluencia de bañistas hizo que fuese necesaria la construcción de una Plaza de Toros para la realización de estos festejos que se inauguró en 1878, con forma poligonal excavada en la roca a modo de anfiteatro romano y capacidad para 3.000 espectadores del momento y una sorprendente acústica.
