Visits to the Mine Museum and the Puits des Glénons
Coal has been for nearly two hundred years the main resource of the city. In 1974, at the closing of the last shaft at La Machine, many miners wanted to perpetuate the memory of their profession through an educational, pedagogical but also captivating place. Open since 1983, the Mine Museum consists of two complementary sites: • the Mine Museum, housed in the former administrative headquarters of the "Houillères", which traces the history of coal and the life of the Gueules Noires and houses objects, photographs, models deposited by the former miners. You will also find the directors' office, a large room for plans, a model of the city, collections of minerals, fossils, lamps and many testimonies of mining history; • the Glénons well and its mine gallery, which will share with you the harsh working conditions of miners, women, children and animals. Your guide will introduce you to the know-how used to extract coal, support techniques, safety in an easy access gallery. Informations Free entry
