Lisnaskea has been described as 'The Town of Live and Let Live' and this description does indeed fit the town. On the walking tour of the Main Street we will be focusing on the characters who lived and worked in the buildings we will be passing and the history of the past years.  Special attention will be paid to the two Market Yards, the Butter Market and the Corn Market Yard, where the Cross stands. The cross has a history all of its own, and shows the melding of different traditions over the centuries. Even the name Lisnaskea has a historical meaning which we will tell you all about.  The stories and history come from local historians who have left us a marvellous legacy of their memories -changing times and a changing world. These historians include John Carron, Noel Maguire and  John Reihill and we will be quoting from their words and memories on the walk, as well as using the different census records which detail the families who lived in the building we pass. If anyone gets a bit tired there are opportunities to sit down en route, and also plenty of opportunities to ask questions. There will be folk along that afternoon who can hopefully answer most questions, but we can also research answers, too. Some years ago Lisnaskea Historical Society produced a map of the town through the ages, using the census records and these will be available, free, on the afternoon. There will also be available for purchase the book that Lisnaskea Historical Society produced last year. There is a lot of information about the history of the town of Lisnaskea in this book which is called 'Lough Head Revealed'.  Old families have stayed in the area and there are names you will recognise above the shops doors. There is much to be proud of in Lisnaskea. Come and see for yourself!
