Overview

Wooden houses intended to accommodate the victims of the Second World War, the huts were, before sheltering families who came to find refuge there, houses in kit with innovative and unique architecture designed to be quickly assembled in areas that had suffered a disaster. In 1944-45, the Liberation of France led with it the last destructions of the war. More than 5 million French people are then affected. United States, Canada, Great Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland will respond to a call from France to house them as worthily as possible. Many creators, fathers of modern design, will also create the first furniture produced in large series to bring comfort and modernity in a hard period, where most had lost everything. Gathered within the Cité de l'Habitat Provisoire ®, at the heart of what was once the largest city in the country of Lorient, 3 barracks still bear witness to this architecture and its furnishings from Liberation to Reconstruction. An architectural testimony of 80 years ago, but that many peoples exposed to war, disasters or climate change still know in various forms around the world. This year, as part of the 80th anniversary of the liberation, discover the overwhelming destiny of Antony FLEUR", popular education activist who died in deportation, founder of many youth hostels in Morbihan.
