Overview

6 September 2025 (10:00 - 16:00) 7 September 2025 (10:00 - 16:00) Westerkirk Parish Library, is a purpose-built space to house books, the majority of which were bought with a legacy from Thomas Telford, the renowned 19th century Civil Engineer. The building dates to 1863, designed to the specification of the London architect, J Habershon. It is in the Gothic Revival Style, a popular and avant-garde fashion at the time. For Doors Open Days our library will be open and all the documents pertaining to the library’s history, available for the public to peruse. We also have the valuation Rolls for other buildings in the vicinity and the full sale details of the 1912 sale of the Westerhall Estate. Visitors will also be able to browse Thomas Telford’s Atlas and his autobiography. All visitors to the library will be given an introduction and an overview of the library prior to enjoying the building and its grounds. There are two rooms within the library which are wide enough for wheelchair access. The portaloo is adjacent to the building – accessed by a grasspath. There is no running water on the site. Fresh water for tea and coffee is procured from our neighbour in the School House. We have bottled water for sale.
