Window Repair Workshop at Walsh Street Barracks, Ballina, Co. Mayo
In support of the Town Centres First policy set out in the Programme for Government: Our Shared Future (2020), the Historic Towns Initiative (HTI) in Ballina is a joint undertaking by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, The Heritage Council and Mayo County Council’s Architectural Conservation Office, which aims to promote the heritage-led regeneration of Ballina.
The Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021 sets out a roadmap for Ireland’s transition to a climate resilient, biodiversity rich and climate neutral economy. This shift to a climate neutral future means that the conservation and repurposing of existing historic building stock has become increasingly more important. Increased maintenance and repair will be key to building resilience in our historic buildings and towns to enable them to withstand the effects of a changing environment.
Window conservation works funded under HTI 2024 form part of this year’s conservation project at Walsh Street Barracks. Mayo County Council’s Architectural Conservation Office and Carrabine Joinery Ltd. will:
• Discuss the importance of examining window design, construction and historic materials.
• Demonstrate traditional joinery techniques and appropriate repair methodologies.
Programme:
14:30 – 14:40 Window Design and Historic Materials
14:40 – 15:30 Traditional Joinery Techniques
