Witness a medieval battle
Lorentzen Castle was built between 1328 and 1334 by Frederick II of Sarrewerden. The plain castle, or «Wasserburg», was originally surrounded by a ditch, fed with water by the nearby river Eichel. Some defensive elements are still visible: foliage in which the drawbridge is framed, loopholes, hinges used to support the imposing doors, etc. The castle underwent several transformations during its history: roof with broken sides covered with slate (eighteenth century), installation of a staircase balusters baroque style (eighteenth century). After the Revolution, the last inhabitant from the princes of Nassau Sarrebrück fled the castle. It is then confiscated and sold to National Property. It is now divided into 7 private properties and is partially inhabited. Its outbuildings (mill and dimière barn) contain a center of initiation to the nature, the culture and the environment: the barn to the landscapes which presents a permanent exhibition «Secrets of Landscapes».
