Vernet-les-Bains is a village of the Pyrénées-Orientales, located at the foot of Canigou in the valley of Cady. The name of Vernet-les-Bains results(comes) from Verne, name in a common way given to the alder, tree very spread at the edge of rivers, and of presence of sources(springs) of hot water and therefore of baths. From Middle Ages, Vernet was renowned for its thermal sources(springs) of sulphurous waters, exploited(run) by the monks of the abbey. But it is at the end of the XVIIIth century, in the XIXth century and in the XXth centuries when the baths of Vernet knew a spectacular development, grace(favour) partly in the construction of the train line Perpignan / Villefranche de Conflent. They note then the edification of the thermal baths of the Commanders(Majors) then that of thermal baths Mercader, that of numerous hotels and the casino. Jusqu' before the last world war, many personalities came stay in Vernet-les-Bains. At the beginning of the XXth century, the British men(women) land(turn up) in number and organise their life in the village. They practise the golf, tennis, croquet, create the very upper-crust " English Club " and make build a church,’ "English Church" of Anglican persuasion. The first stone is put on April 17th, 1911 in the presence of Rudyard Kipling. The church of England is one of rare buildings(ships) witness(baton) of very important page of the joint history(story) of Vernet-les-Bains and of Cordial Agreement. This church of England presents a bare style which announces the Art deco and the modern movement which follows the end of the World War I. The church of England Saint George is a building non-orientated, built on basement, established(constituted) by a north / south centered nave, in four spans, covering of a roofing in bâtière in visible(apparent) skeleton and of a belfry covering by a roofing in four slopes.
