"Town of the door" The one night legend and history of Veivirzenai town
"TOWN OF THE DOOR" - a 12-square-meter "secretary" made of old doors, clay and other materials has been created in Veivirzenai and decorated about 40 pcs. door that became information stands revealing the history of the town, prepared and decorated the building of Veivirzenai Culture Center outdoor wall.
The 12-square-meter "secretary" installation depicts the legend of Veivirzenai - the transfer of the chapel from the city center to the new cemetery in one night. What does the project born in the creative workshop say? This is how the stubborn Veivirzenai people in 1866. The chapel was built in 1791 and stood in the center of the town. In St. George's Cemetery, the parishioners transferred them to the new cemetery via the Veivirzas brast.The house of God was under threat, and the Catholic chapel could turn into a church. It was important to be able to raise the cross on the tower, then the Russian tsar's order was no longer valid.
Doors are like a work of art. Do we often think about the fact that the door, in fact, is a phenomenon, not just an everyday accent, that protects us from outsiders intrusion. Artists in various parts of the world use their own talent, turning a caretaker into a true work of art. We will detect this symbol in the world’s greatest cultural treasures: in the literature depicted in art, fairy tales, proverbs, religious texts. Not surprisingly, it’s so widespread common cultural code. Doors are such an integral part of every cultural rite, an object of arts and crafts. doors - were so important to our great-grandparents cherished in various rites. Therefore, it is worth presenting the door more widely, acquired various forms.
In 2020 Veivirzenai Culture Center implemented the project "Creative Workshops". During the project professionals and local artists were brought together team in Veivirzenai town, decorated about 40 pcs. the door that became information stands revealing the history of the town, prepared and decorated the building of Veivirzenai Culture Center outdoor wall (created a map of Veiviržėnai town from the door). "Creative workshops" in Veivirzenai also took place in 2021. The aim of the project is to continue the creation of cultural objects in the town of Veivirzenai, to reveal Veivirzenai history and distinctiveness of the town, to create a "Secret" of the door in the valley of the town, Legend-history of Veivirzenai town. During the project, a 12-square-meter secretary was created (covered with tempered glass, which allows you to stand on the secretary and inspect every detail, the secretary is equipped with lighting, which allows you to visit the secretary in the dark), with a clay chamotte, tree on the old door the historical moment of the town was restored by various other means - the transfer of the chapel from the town center to the cemetery.
Legend of Veivirzenai town Chapel
The story goes that in 1866 when Lithuania was ruled by tsarist Russia and despised by Lithuanians and catholicks. In Veivirzenai the tsar's government planned to replace St. to establish an Orthodox church in the old cemetery in the center of St. George's Chapel. All the more so as the chapel did not have a cross. The townspeople felt sorry for their sanctuary and decided to preserv it: one night they heard the tsar's gendarmes diverting their attention and while the gendarmes slept the townspeople cerried their chapel behind Veivirza river to the village Eidukiai through a stream. Thus the chapel was saved and a cross appeard even after this day services are held there on eve of all Saints. Perhaps in fact it is even a real historical event as the logs shows that it was not laid out in turn hence in a hurry.
Veivirzenai is located in Klaipeda district of Lithuania, on the left tributary of the Minija river - Veivirza river. Veivirzenai area is rich in traditional folk creations. Growing town, eldership, community efforts to nurture historic communities traditions of existence and the creation of new ones show that cultural values have been created over the centuries will be nurtured and preserved for future generations. Preserving old traditions, we want to create architecture and create new art forms that are attractive the residents of the town and the guests who come here, showing the places marks of distinctiveness. The artistic objects created in Veivirzenai show that Veivirzenai has a very deep tradition, the town is rich in heritage, and the legend and objects revealing the history of the town created by the concentrated communities show how important it is to hear and learn about Veivirzenai history and legend at a European level.
