Overview

Ukraine is known to the world as "Zhytnytsia", which is why the colors of its flag symbolize the yellow endless fields of rye and the blue, clear, peaceful sky. We are concerned with the project of restoration of the windmill, creation of a museum. The mill is an integral part of the grain processing process, and therefore the culture of life of the hard-working Ukrainian people. The forgotten symbol of Ukraine. Unfortunately, during the times of the Soviet Union, these historical monuments were destroyed and neglected, but in the world windmills are a brand of a state that is respected by its people and visited by tourists. A country that does not respect its history has no future. This is what Russian military aggression repeatedly proves, saying that Ukraine did not exist and does not exist. But after a year of struggle, the Ukrainian people are again choosing their will and independence for the support of the world. The windmill, like Ukraine, will once again spread its wings!

In 2007, I was returning from a work trip to southern Ukraine and turned off the main highway onto a rural road. Passing by one village, I saw a large round brick tower 10 m high, which was completely different from other buildings, especially in the countryside. I thought that it was some kind of water tank, until on the other side I saw the remains of a cross, which I had not seen before, but I immediately understood that it was a windmill. Of which there were more than 1,000 in Ukraine, and there are no more than 10 left. Of course, thanks to the Soviet invasion, the main goal of which was to destroy the people, culture, and make a soulless mass out of a person. Interestingly, after 2 villages, I left for my grandmother's native village, where I spent the summer months as a child. After 11 years, in 2018, I opened a public non-profit organization for the education of children, and in 2020 I came across a grant application for the restoration of cultural heritage from the US Embassy. The project was not supported, but I collected the first documents, learned about the history of menots, their immeasurable influence on the development of the entire Zaporizhzhia region, which no one had ever told me about - neither my parents nor at school. In 2021, our project was supported by the European Union - Cultural Europe - Mobility Grant. My team saw live mills for the first time in the Netherlands and Belgium. And then we are working on the project, attracting funding. That is, my school of robotics "Forward to the Future" became interested in the project of restoration of the Windmill, not only on such issues as a mechanical, engineering, automatic, ecological device, but also as an object of cultural heritage, a monument of history, culture, ideology, mechanization, which brought to our lands by peaceful immigrants from Europe - German Mennonites. The main feature of the Mill from other structures is that it is not a static structure, but rather a living creature, which was not accidentally mistaken for giants by the famous literary hero of Miguel De Cervantes' novel "Don Quixote" (1605). The mill is a very philosophical building.

European Dimension

The story about mills is also a story about people, their founders. These destinies are very closely related. It was after another modern Russian invasion in 2014 and 2022 that I felt the influence of European culture and the intertwining of peoples living in Ukraine. In particular, the influence of the Menonite Germans, thanks to which the economy, culture, and education in the Zaporizhia region and the city of Zaporizhia developed. Unfortunately, Soviet propaganda eventually destroyed the settlement and tortured people. The descendants of German Mennonites left for Europe, Canada and other countries, but their spirit, the second historical homeland, remained in Ukraine. My goal is to rebuild cultural bridges, raise forgotten values and history, restore the mill, start it up and treat all guests with bread and salt according to the ancient Ukrainian tradition.
