a family from alentejo
My mother is almost 80 years old. She lives now between Lisbon and Évora, where she was born, in Alentejo. Despite having always heard many stories about her family, about her mother and the 11 uncles, about her absent father, about her various works, about her childhood, I've never decided to write what I was told, despite considering that it is important because it reveals so much about my country, its past. but also of its evolution, and it allows me to reflect on this territory, but also on europe and myself.
This story concerns about my mother´s family, my own heritage, that I what to register to prevent from lost and oblivion. The narrative takes place mainly at Lisboa and Alentejo - a southern and poor region of Portugal. It emphazises the every day life during repression years of dictatorship, and after carnations revolution, at 1974, where comunist party had great support among workers, detailing particular life of common people, their fear, joys, beliefs, changes. The project aims an illustrated and written comunication to young and children, in order to sooner create empathy among europeans and curiosity to visit and get to know eachother, enriching our common ground.
The story I present reveals the social progress of Europe, the capacity of people and society to reinvent and overcome. In my maternal family, my grandfather was an absentee, my mother has always worked lefting studies at early age, my grandmother too, they were always guided by gender equal rights at work and at home, nonetheless, and by the importance in the education of their children, which in 3 generations surpassed the schooling of the previous generation.
