Guided tour by an architect of the church of Billy-Chevannes
The construction of the church of Saint-Antoine de Chevannes dates back to the end of the 11th century. During its ten centuries of existence, it has suffered many damages and restorations. The choir was taken over in 1689: the restorers chose not to take over the stone arch of the old state but to replace it with an unusual ensemble consisting of a huge beam resting on the transoms of walls that reinforce the pilasters of the old arcade. In 1787 a new campaign of restoration gives rise to the repair of the gable wall of the portal, the construction of the two flying buttresses of the facade and the six flying buttresses of the nave. A structural bell tower, in front of the choir, first collapsed in the 19th century. Rebuilt in the 1930s it burned in the 1960s. Since the bronze bell, dated 1511, rests on the clay floor of the nave. In 1982, a part of a master beam of the framework gave way and the roof of the nave flowed.
