Clackmannan has had a rich and eventful history. There is evidence for early prehistoric settlement to the west and east of the town and there may well have been a hill fort on King's Seat Hill. The Stone of Mannan was probably of ritual importance to Iron Age people in the vicinity. Later there was a Royal residence on King’s Seat Hill, where in the mid 14th century the Bruce family built their own tower.
The town developed, the Sheriff of the county lived there and dispensed justice at the Mercat Cross, where people gathered for fairs and markets and where criminals were chained before the Tolbooth was built in 1592. Clackmannan was the county town until the18th century, when it was superceded by Alloa.
Lady Catherine Bruce ‘knighted’ Robert Burns with the sword of King Robert Bruce when he visited her at Clackmannan Tower in 1787. The town also had an interesting industrial history from the later 18th century onwards, including a woollen mill built by John Paton, Son & Co.
Clackmannan Heritage Group has arranged a fascinating exhibition which looks at aspects of the town's story and includes old photographs, maps and films.
The film presentations will be at 2.00pm and 3.00pm.

There is level access into and throughout the building.
