The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (the new ‘Sick Kids’) is a world class children’s hospital. The building opened in 2021 to provide treatment and care for children and their families from Edinburgh and across Scotland. As soon as they arrive, visitors benefit from the building’s integrated Art and Therapeutic Design Programme, the largest of its kind in a healthcare setting in Europe. The excellence of the built environment provides interest, distraction and comfort while reinforcing the quality of care delivered by NHS Lothian. At the heart of the building, Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity’s (ECHC) Hub is a safe, welcoming and family friendly space for children and families to access additional support they may need through their hospital visit. Countering the clinical environment in wards and treatment areas, the Hub has a colourful, modern and flexible design, easily adapting to suit the wide-ranging ages, needs and interests of family groups of children with chronic health conditions, mental health concerns and with complex care needs. Working alongside the NHS, the ECHC team works hard to take away the fear and worry that is inevitably felt when a child needs to come to hospital.

Planned Activities
Tours will run on the hour and on the half hour from 10am through to 3pm. Tours will show families how a thoughtfully designed building, alongside an empathetic team of people can take the fear and worry from a hospital visit – for both children and their families.

All visitors will be taken on a guided tour of the hospital, finishing with time to dwell in the Outpatients Department and charity Hub, set up with information stalls and family friendly activities. There will be time to find out more about how the hospital works and ask any questions.
Refreshments will be available in our family Hub and in our ECHC shop on the ground floor.
