The Dundee Congregational Church was opened as Ward Chapel in 1833. It is the earliest Congregational Church in Dundee. It originated in the union of two churches which existed in the town at the end of the eighteenth century and has continued in ecclesiastical use since its completion.
The church is prominently located at the end of Euclid Street and is an early example of a building using the Gothic Revival style. The building has a symmetrical arrangement internally and externally, and has many notable architectural features, including decorative leaded glazing forming a clerestory window around the central portion of the church. There is high quality carved woodwork around the pulpit, choir stalls and pews, with some Gothic cast iron detail.
The organ is a prominent feature on the mezzanine above the pulpit. It is an historic three-manual pipe organ refurbished to become the J R Miller Memorial Organ in memory of the craftsmanship of this historic Dundee organ builder. It is believed to be the largest remining organ of its type in the world.
Known as the Cathedral of Congregationalism in Scotland, in the past the church has been associated with many influential families of the Dundee area who have worshipped here. These include manufacturers, merchants, dyers, mill-owners, foundry-owners, such as the Baxters, Buists, Carmichaels, Gilroys, Halleys, Hendersons, Lows, Neishes, Prains, Scotts and Stevensons.
Today the church is still a welcome place for fellowship and worship. Our church facilities have recently been the venue for Public Mental Health /Suicide Prevention Training, and we are also proud to have been affiliated with the Dundee Sea Cadets in this their 80th anniversary year. We are honoured to help and support them in their work.
For Doors Open Days there will be guided tours of the building and organ music will be playing for some of this time. Regular Sunday worship is from 11am to 12 noon - all visitors are welcome to attend.
Wheelchair access to the church hall and other areas out with the main sanctuary of the church is via a side door to the church. This is signposted on entrance.
Water bottles can be refreshed and refreshments provided.
