The City Road Allotment site was established in 1948, after a local resident petitioned the then Dundee Corporation to provide a growing area on former Balgay Farm pastureland. Many of the local community who took allotment plots on the site were skilled tradesmen, with a consequence that many of them built their sheds and greenhouses from reclaimed materials, including Nissen huts, sash windows, exterior doors, reclaimed glazed bricks, even a former tramcar. Boilers and pipes were installed in greenhouses for winter warmth. Items such as decorated steel fire hearth panels, cast iron air bricks and brass fitments were frequently used. The tradition of using reclaimed materials is still in evidence on the site, the styles and appearance of some of the buildings reflect the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the diverse personalities within it.
For Doors Open Days visitors will be provided with a map to take a self-guided tour of the allotments, there will be children's activities, and a plant sale.
The City Road site has an easily accessible flat main path which allows visitors to look at the adjacent plots. However, the site is built on a slope so appropriate footwear is needed for tours of the plots themselves.
