Overview

Greetings from Ukrainian team of heritage lovers!

We live in a beautiful ancient town in the north east of Ukraine. It is called Romny. Believe it or not it is 928 years old! The fortress town of Romny defended the southeastern borders of Kievan Rus' and is mentioned in the year 1096, describing one of the episodes in the biography of Volodymyr Monomakh and his campaign against the Polovtsians. Nowadays it is a green, peaceful and lovely place to live. Our town has a long and interesting history and we believe it to be the real treasure of European heritage.

Our beloved town is special and unique. A beauty of contemporary Romny combined with its long history leaves nobody indifferent. Our project is called Romny Heritage in Stones: a Project of Monuments and History. And it is not a surprise because there are a lot of different monuments in Romny and each of them reflect historical events: sometimes sad and tragic, sometimes educational and historic, sometimes funny but never boring! That is why we decided to dedicate our project to the monuments of Romny in the shape of an e-book so that everybody could get acquainted with Ukrainian heritage!

We’ve made a very interesting trip round our town to take photos, we visited library and surfed the net to find additional information and here it is https://www.canva.com/design/DAF7QNJ0Qro/GcoYkxvL-Pb5nJkpyCrv6g/view?utm_content=DAF7QNJ0Qro&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=editor  !

Romny monuments heritage combine old history with contemporary events!

The diamond of Romny monuments is dedicated to Taras Shevchenko – Ukrainian poet, writer and artist, whose works are translated into dozens of languages, have become an integral part of the national culture of many nations around the world.

A monument to Romny Heroes of Chornobyl. It tells us about tragical time of a nuclear disaster that occurred on April 26, 1986, at the Chornobyl, Ukraine. It is considered one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. The whole Europe suffered from it, but Ukraine most. It is a horrible thing that we must never forget in order not to let it happen once more.

The next monument is funny and cute! This monument was erected in 2000 in honor of the animals that saved the citizens of Romny from famine in ancient times. It is a monument to a pig! The Romny pig became the fourth monument to a pig in the world. The location of the monument was an ancient city during the time of the Mongol-Tatar invasion of Kievan Rus. Historians have established that the city was subjected to brutal raids and plundering, which condemned its inhabitants to starvation. However, the population was not deprived of pigs. It was their numerous bones that were found at this site. This indicates the lifesaving role played by these animals in the life of the Ukrainian people.

A memorial sign installed to commemorate the stay of the Hetman Ivan Mazepa and the Swedish monarch Charles XII in the city. 315 years ago, history was being made in the city of Romny. It was one of the first attempts to achieve Ukraine's independence. An interesting historical detail: In September 1941, the German invader and panzer leader, Colonel General Heinz Guderian, observed from a high hill the Soviet counterattack. This strategist, in his post-war memoirs, paid much attention to our city. Indeed, he mentioned Karl XII's stay in Romny and expressed his thoughts about the residents of Romny, our quiet, tidy, and cultured city back then.

Unfortunately our history is not always happy. The next monument is a Memorial sign to the Heroes-Fighters for the Independence of Ukraine. It is the most important monument of our contemporary history. It is dedicated to all the Ukrainian fighters for the independence of Ukraine. There is a sign on it “Heroes never die” and lines from a poem. The monument was installed to honor the memory of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, participants of the Revolution of Dignity (year 2014), the anti-terrorist operation, and defenders of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war (year 2022 till nowadays). We believe that they are a real example for every nation in the world how one must love, treasure and defend their motherland, history culture, nation and language, a right for life, freedom and independence…

Romny monument heritage is a heritage of Ukraine! And Ukraine is a European country with a great history and experience that is of a great value! It serves as a link between the past, present, and future, shaping individual and collective identities, fostering a sense of belonging and continuity, and enriching societies with diversity and shared experiences. Our history teaches us to be patient, honest, truthful and helpful! Out small town of Romny is a real example of it! It is worth vising!
