Weaves of Ukrainian Embroidery
We, students of the 7-B class of the Lyceum 2 in Lviv, decided to prepare an interesting project about Ukrainian embroidery, as through it we learn the history of our people. Our ancestors passed it on to us, and we will pass it on to future generations. This is our heritage.
Each new generation preserves the embroidery ornaments of the past and adds a bit of the modern. Embroidery differs from a poppy flower on a canvas to dozens of different colors and patterns. Embroidery is most often found on shirts, wedding or Easter towels, napkins or tablecloths, and jewelry, in particular necklaces.
Gerdan is a neck ornament made of beads in various patterns. Today, the introduction of folk elements to everyday style is gaining more and more popularity. We joined this trend and decided to endow the gerdan with ancient ornaments, as well as to research the variation of these ornaments in different regions.
Vyshyvanka is an amulet. Starting from the christening, little Ukrainians have their embroidery, and then every important life and festive events are accompanied by it. Since ancient times, it has been a symbol of indomitability, courage, and the fact that we are Ukrainians.
For years, they tried to devalue our culture, and make it a laughing stock, so preserving and passing on culture to the next generations is very important. Even now, while we are working on this project, Ukrainian museums are robbed; mosaics, books, ancient churches, paintings, and other monuments are destroyed.
We chose a product for a long time, as there were many different ideas, and we decided to make a gerdan, due to its colorfulness and variety. After looking at the patterns of different regions, everyone chose one and studied its features. At the beginning of the winter vacation, our group gathered in the classroom and wove ornaments to music. After finishing weaving the gerdan, we had an interesting idea - to glue the corresponding patterns on each area of the wooden map of Ukraine. At the same time, we refined and improved the screenplay, held rehearsals during long breaks at school, and completed the map.
We hope you like it!
