Berries of Love: Kalevala High
An opening scene from our show Kalevala High. The show is a devised piece of work surrounding around the themes and legends of the Finnish mythology "Kalevala" transformed in a high school drama setting. The show is written, designed, directed and performed by the students with the help and guidance of the two facilitators of the group. The opening scene is loosely based on the legend of Marjatta, and tells the story of a teenage pregnancy and the power that rumors can have. It is important for this group of young artists to be able to work bravely even with tough themes and to be able to tell stories through their own voice and narrative.
Kalevala was chosen by the students, because they felt that it is a piece that offers a variety of topics, characters and conflicts they can easily connect to.
The piece is the documentation of a theatre play.
For the piece John Martin Crawford's Kalevala translation and the song PMMP - Rusketusraidat was chosen.
