Overview

Bread is an essential part of everyday nutrition. Each European country has its own unique recipes of this delicious product. For Ukrainians, bread has a sacred meaning and is a symbol of life.

We are a group of 5-grade students of Myrtiuky Lyceum (aged 10 - 11) who asked our teachers to accompany us on our field trip in order to find out more about bread. In our video we report on our recent visit to a museum of bread situated in the village of Pidhorodtsi in the west of Ukraine. However, it is not an ordinary museum. We had an opportunity to take part in a hands-on activity and explore each step of baking bread.

Now, we know how to select the best ingredients so that the baked loaf will be healthy and good to eat. We can make the dough and form the future loaves. We have learned a lot about the history of our land and how it is connected with the history of other European countries.

After we returned from that trip, we had a class party devoted to bread. We did a lot of research in order to find poems, song, riddles and even tongue-twisters about bread. We talked to our grandparents who told us about the traditions of baking and consuming bread. In the conclusion, we have learned a lot, but there are still much to explore and discover.

We consider bread to be a non-material European heritage. Our group were lucky to try and bake our first loaves. We hope that our experience will encourage other people to discover and revive their ancient traditional ways of bread-making.
