Nicolinas Festivities
The “Nicolinas” Festivities are a cultural tradition that really caught our attention and it is worthy to share and show. It is a festival exclusive to the “Cidade Berço” – Guimarães (birthplace of our nation – Portugal) that shares European roots and traditions, and also because our school “Escola Secundária Martins Sarmento” is one of the main organisers of this festival. As a result, we felt it was a unique opportunity to promote a tradition that is so emblematic of the city of Guimarães.
This project led us to learn more about this centuries-old academic tradition, as we were able to interview the “Nicolinos”, who helped us better understand how the events mentioned in the interview recorded in the video.
In our view, we thought we should win this competition for the dedication we had to this topic, our creativity, the strength of our teamwork, the emotional impact and we couldn't fail to mention the unbeatable preparation on this topic that is the “Nicolinas”.
The “Nicolinas” originally began as a religious celebration in honour of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of students. Over time, the festivity has become more popular and has aroused more interest in people, being marked by marches, songs, dances and other cultural manifestations that involve the active participation of several generations. This tradition is only maintained thanks to the young people who take great pleasure in continuing these festivities.
It was a pleasure to have taken part in this project, as it helped us to learn a little more about this Northern Portuguese tradition, linked to European characters and religious stories, that is so special and so loved by all young people and different generations that gather together to celebrate friendship spirit and love. We are eternally grateful to our teacher, the “Nicolinos” and our colleagues for the help they provided us to build this project.
