Craftivismi – rauhanomainen keino vaikuttaa 

Meidän käsityöporukkamme tekee yhteistyötä kreikkalaisen koulun, 6o Gymnasio Larisas, kanssa. Projektimme lähti liikkeelle siitä, kun opiskelimme koulussa käsityötunneilla rauhanomaisista mielenosoittamisen keinoista. Kreikkalaiset opiskelivat samoja asioita heidän yhteiskuntaopin tunnillaan. Esiin nousivat muun muassa mielipidekirjoitukset, rauhanomaiset marssit ja craftivismi (craft+activism), jonka ympärille rakensimme kilpailutyömme. 

Työmme näyttää, mitä me nuoret haluamme säästää tulevaisuutta varten ja mitä pidämme elämässä tärkeänä. Meidän käsityöryhmämme on porukalla virkannut ja neulonut erilaisia muotoja, jotka kuvastavat asioita, joita haluamme säästää. Kreikan porukka on myös virkannut samanlaisia kuvioita parhaansa mukaan käsitöistä innostuneen opettajansa opastuksella. 

Me lähetimme meidän palamme Kreikkaan ja he lähettivät heidän palansa meille tänne Suomeen. Meidän suunnitelmamme aluksi oli kasata palat yhteen ja sitten lähettää kokonainen työ Kreikkaan, mutta he halusivat itse koota työn heille sopivaan muotoon, jotta sen saisi sopimaan hyvin heidän valitsemaansa paikkaan. Heidän palansa ovat tulossa meille ja meidän ideanamme olisi laittaa työ esille meidän koulumme sisätiloihin, jotta se pysyisi ehjänä ja hyväkuntoisena.

Töiden viereen kiinnitetään QR-koodi, jonka kautta pääsee lukemaan meidän ajatuksiamme projektiin liittyen Padlet-alustalta. Näin saamme ajatuksiamme näkyväksi kaikille. 

Videollamme kuvataan prosessia kohti valmiita kokonaisuuksia. 

Arvot 

Aloitimme projektin teon verkkotunnilla. Verkkotunnin aluksi suurinta osaa jännitti. Esittäytymisen jälkeen kuitenkin tunti eteni luontevasti. Tämä innosti meitä jatkamaan yhteistyötä vielä keväälläkin. Toiveisamme on uusi verkkotunti ja yhteystietojen vaihto vapaa-ajan yhteydenpitoon. 

Verkkotunnin aikana puhuimme kreikkalaisten nuorten kanssa siitä, mitä haluamme projektillamme ilmaista. Käytössämme oli seuraavat apukysymykset:

Yhteisestä keskustelusta nousi esiin seuraavia asioita:

Työn edistyminen  

Työn tekeminen oli niin mukavaa, että ei pelkästään käsityötunneilla mutta jopa välituntisin teimme työn osia. Projektiin ei osallistunut pelkästään käsityöryhmä, vaan myös koulun aikuisia ja oppilaita. Osa oppilaista teki työn osia myös kotona omalla vapaa-ajallaan. 

Liitimme työhömme myös tekstejä kuten, no farm no food, I love nature, love, hate ja be kind. Työn osiin tuli myös erilaisia kuvioita, kuten puita ja autoja.  Keskustelimme nimittäin siitä, millainen ympäristökuorma syntyy erilaisten autojen valmistamisessa. Sähköautojen akkujen valmistamisesta nimittäin syntyy hyvin paljon päästöjä. Ne eivät siis välttämättä ole erityisesti parempi vaihtoehto polttomoottoriautoille. 

Puiden ja kukkien kuvat työssä kuvastavat sitä, kuinka haluamme säästää luonnon ja metsät ja niiden ekosysteemit. Yhdistimme myös muutamia harmaita ja valkoisia paloja, joissa kuvastetaan, kuinka Suomessa on harmaa ja loskainen talvi ajoittain. Näiden loskaisten talvien takana on ilmaston lämpeneminen. 

Kulttuuriperintö 

Jaamme osaamista koulujen välillä. Kreikassa ei ole käsityön opetusta, joten heille tämä oli ihan uusi juttu osallistua käsityöprojektiin. He opettelivat virkkaamaan ja neulomaan opettajansa johdolla. Heidän opettajansa on innokas opettamaan heitä virkkamaan ja neulomaan.  Muutama kreikkalainen oppilas myös innostui erityisesti tämän projektin jälkeen virkkaamaan kotonakin.              

Kreikassa on ennen vanhaan ollut hyvin vahva käsityökulttuuri, mutta aikojen saatossa se on vähentynyt ja nykyään yhä harvempi henkilö harrastaa käsitöiden tekemistä. Opettaja haluaa projektin kautta nostattaa käsityön merkitystä jokapäiväisessä elämässä ja näyttää kuinka tärkeä käsityökulttuuri oikeasti on. 

Meistä on outoa, että joissain maissa ei opeteta käsityötä ollenkaan, koska käsityöt ovat meille suuri osa meidän kulttuuriamme. Käsitöiden tekeminen on mukavaa: kun itse tekee, saa päättää mitä ja miten toteuttaa työn. Esimerkiksi meidän ryhmäläisistämme osa tekee käsitöitä kotona sukulaisten ja perheen jäsenien kanssa.  Meidän käsistämme syntyy muun muassa keppihevosia, lankatöitä, erilaisia vaatekappaleita sekä niiden korjaamista, maataloustyökoneiden lisäosia ja niiden korjaamista.  

Eurooppalaisuuden merkitys 

Mitä eurooppalaisuus tarkoittaa meille? 

Meille eurooppalaista kulttuuriperintöä on esimerkiksi se, että meillä pidetään yllä puhdasta maataloustuotantoa, mikä tuottaa puhdasta ruokaa. Suomessa meillä on myös melko puhdas vesistö ja meillä on tehokas metsänhoitojärjestelmä. Myös luonto on vielä puhdas. Kreikassa oppilasryhmän asuinalueella on ollut tuhoisia tulvia. Se huolestuttaa heitä. Meillä Suomessa ei onneksi jouduta kokemaan tuhoisia tulvia, mutta ilmastonmuutos on muuttanut talvia. Ympäristöstä ja sen ekosysteemeistä pitää siis pitää yhdessä huolta. 

Tärkeää on se, että saamme olla millaisia haluamme ilman että pitää pelätä. Saamme seurustella ja olla ystävä kenen kanssa haluamme, ja voimme pukeutua oman tyylin mukaisesti.  

Yhteisen keskustelumme pohjalta nousi esiin myös se, että demokratia on tärkeää sekä kreikkalaisille, että meille suomalaisille nuorille. Meillä on myös oikeus tulla kuulluksi meitä koskevissa asioissa. Meillä on myös oikeus vapaa-aikaan, eikä meidän tarvitse käydä töissä pakosta. 

Tällä käsityöprojektilla halusimme siis sanoa ja tuoda näkyväksi, että meidän mielestämme tulevaisuudessa on paljon säilyttämisen arvoista! 

Craftivism – a peaceful means of influence

Our craft team cooperates with the Greek school, 6o Gymnasio Larisas. Our project started when we studied peaceful methods of protest in craft classes at school. The Greeks studied the same things in their social studies class. Opinion writings, peaceful marches and craftivism (craft+activism), around which we built our competition work, came to the fore.

Our work shows what we young people want to save for the future and what we consider important in life. Our craft group has crocheted and knitted different shapes as a group, which reflect the things we want to save. The Greek group has also crocheted similar patterns as best they can with the guidance of their teacher who is enthusiastic about crafts.

We sent our pieces to Greece and they sent theirs to us here in Finland. Our plan at first was to put the pieces together and then send the whole work to Greece, but they wanted to assemble the work themselves in a form that suited them, so that it would fit well in the location of their choice. Their pieces are coming to us and our idea would be to display the work inside our school so that it remains intact and in good condition.

A QR code will be attached next to the works, through which you can read our thoughts related to the project on the Padlet platform. This is how we make our thoughts visible to everyone.

Set of values 

We started the project in an online class. At the beginning of the online class, most of the people were nervous. However, after the introduction, the class progressed naturally. This inspired us to continue our cooperation even in the spring. Our hope is a new online class and exchange of contact information for free time communication. During the online class, we talked with the Greek youth about what we want to express with our project. We used the following auxiliary questions: What should we fight for in our lifetime? What is important to you in life? Is our planet worth saving? The following issues emerged from the joint discussion: Nature and its ecosystems Agricultural Friends Free time Democracy Human rights Religion Family and loved ones Freedom

Progress of work  

Doing the work was so nice that not only in the handicraft classes, but even in the breaks, we did parts of the work. Not only did the craft group participate in the project, but also the school's adults and students. Some of the students also did parts of the work at home in their free time.

We also attached texts such as, "No farm No food", "I love nature", "love, hate and be kind" to our work. Various patterns, such as trees and cars, also became part of the work.  Namely, we discussed what kind of environmental burden is created in the manufacturing of different cars. The manufacture of batteries for electric cars produces a lot of emissions. So they are not necessarily a particularly better option for internal combustion engine cars.

The images of trees and flowers in the work reflect how we want to save nature and forests and their ecosystems. We also combined a few gray and white pieces, which reflect how Finland has a gray and slushy winter at times. Behind these slushy winters is global warming.

Cultural heritage

We share expertise between our schools. In Greece, there is no handicraft education, so this was a completely new thing for them to participate in a handicraft project. They learned to crochet and knit under the guidance of their teacher. Their teacher is eager to teach them how to crochet and knit.  A few Greek students also got excited to crochet at home, especially after this project. 

Greece used to have a very strong handicraft culture, but over the years it has decreased and nowadays fewer and fewer people enjoy making handicrafts. Through the project, the teacher wants to raise the importance of handicrafts in everyday life and show how important handicraft culture really is.

We find it strange that in some countries crafts are not taught at all, because crafts are a big part of our culture. Making crafts is nice: when you do it yourself, you get to decide what and how to do the work. For example, some of our group members do crafts at home with relatives and family members.  Our hands produce, among other things, stick horses, yarn works, various pieces of clothing and their repair, additional parts for agricultural machinery and their repair.

The meaning of European identity 

What does European identity mean to us?

For us, European cultural heritage is, for example, the fact that we maintain clean agricultural production, which produces clean food. In Finland, we also have fairly clean water and we have an efficient forest management system. Nature is also still pure. In Greece, there have been devastating floods in the residential area of ​​a group of students. It worries them. Fortunately, we in Finland do not have to experience devastating floods, but climate change has changed winters. The environment and its ecosystems must therefore be taken care of together.

The important thing is that we can be who we want to be without having to be afraid. We can date and be friends with whoever we want, and we can dress according to our own style.  

On the basis of our joint discussion, it also emerged that democracy is important for both Greeks and us young Finns. We also have the right to be heard in matters that concern us. We also have the right to free time, and we don't have to go to work out of necessity.

With this craft project, we wanted to say and make visible that we think there is a lot worth preserving in the future!
