Overview

What does European heritage mean to you?

For us, heritage means the history of a town. It tell us where wecome from and our origins. It connects us with our roots and helps usunderstand our culture.

What do you know about European heritage?

About european heritage we know the Roman Colisseum, the Eifeel tower, the Louvre and the Sagrada familia. About nature we know the Alps, the Norway fiords and the Teide. And about food we know the paella, wich is very typicalhere in Valencia, fish and chips from England, the pizza from Italia andsausages. We know mostly Spanish food.

What story can you tell about the heritage around you?

We know a story from our town about Jaume I.

Valencia was under Muslim rule, and Jaume I wanted to take back the land for the Christian kingdoms. His main goal was to conquer the city of Valencia. JaumeI and his soldiers stayed in El Puig de Santa Maria. They went to the top of a mountain( the mountain of “la patà”) where they had a good view of the land. The Muslims tried to take El Puig again, but Jaume I soldiers won the battle and couldconquer Valencia. There is also a very important legend in our town. During the conquest of Valencia, the soldiers had no water. The king was worried and prayed to the Virgin Mary. Then Jaume I hit a rock with his horse's hoof, and water started to come out.

Now, on the mountain, we can still see the ruins of the castle and the mark of the horse's hoof.

What is the most interesting thing about your local heritage?

A long time ago, people believed that in el Puig there was a very bad dragon. The people did not know how to stop it. When Jaume I heard about the dragon, he decided to fight it. He went up the mountain with his horse and a sword. When the dragon came out, Jaume put his sword in the dragon's heart. The legend says that after the battle, the king put the cross of the Virgin where the dragon fell, as a symbol of peace and protection.
