Overview

For us, heritage is the collection of tangible and intangible assets that reflect the history and cultural diversity of a place. This includes monuments, traditions, languages, landscapes, artistic works, and even architectural works preserved over the centuries. Being able to travel freely throughout Europe has allowed us to immerse ourselves in a wealth of monuments and appreciate the diversity of cultures that survive on our continent and are reflected in its heritage.

The Spanish industrial estate is the industrial heritage that we want to defend in our project. We cannot deny that it is something that differentiates one city from another and even gives identity to a territory. When we walk through an industrial park, especially in our city, Malaga, we can see where small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) thrive, the technological evolution of some companies, as well as small businesses that still coexist with new technology and service companies. Even the sounds we hear are characteristic of this urban place. The industrial assets of the city of Malaga have evolved over the centuries, but we must not forget that Malaga had an important industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, traces of which still remain as part of the city's architectural heritage, such as the chimneys along the seafront promenade, which are a true reflection of a past of industrial hegemony in Europe.

The industrial park represents the social and economic foundations of a territory. In the video we show, we can see the El Viso industrial park. The El Viso Industrial Park is located in Malaga, Province of Malaga, Andalusia. El Viso is located near the University of Malaga Library -Computer Science and Telecommunications Library-, as well as the University of Malaga Sports Complex. Construction of the El Viso Industrial Park began in 1967, at a time when there was a large supply of industrial land available for development in Malaga and the province. The El Viso industrial park was developed in four phases in the following years: 1967, 1970, 1971, and 1975. The development of this industrial park was carried out by a private entity.

The industrial park covers an area of approximately 800,000 m2 and is almost fully occupied, with only around 5,000 m2 remaining undeveloped. The total number of companies located there is approximately 800, which are distributed throughout the industrial park, with no areas left uncovered.

With regard to the size of the warehouses built in the El Viso industrial park, we have found that the largest percentage of them, 39.3%, are warehouses occupying between 200 and 400 m², followed by those covering an area ranging from 400 to 600 m², with 25.2%.

What do we see in this industrial park? Shops, small businesses, various workshops, storage areas, and, on the other hand, we see the ecological culture of our city. It is important to note that it could be better maintained and cleaner, despite the fact that a company is contracted for its maintenance and cleaning in addition to municipal services. Uncontrolled waste is still visible in Spanish industrial parks. Today, the San José del Viso neighborhood (considered a marginal neighborhood for many years) continues to struggle to achieve visible changes in its configuration.

If we analyze the type of activity carried out by the companies located in the industrial park, we can see that the vast majority are engaged in commerce, both wholesale and retail. Within this type, the most notable are, among wholesalers, companies dedicated to food and textiles; among retailers, the sale and display of furniture and vehicles (taking advantage of the large capacity of the warehouses for display). The next most pressing activity is industrial; in this case, the most notable are companies dedicated to the manufacture of furniture and wrought iron items. As for workshops, it should be noted that this activity also occurs to a lesser extent. Finally, the service sector is the least active in the industrial park.

On the other hand, we find it interesting to view the industrial park as an artistic expression of our citizenship. The industrial park is a very familiar place for many associations and local music groups and artists. Due to its infrastructure, we can find industrial buildings that are used as recording and rehearsal studios for both music and dance.

In short, for all the reasons mentioned above, we believe that the industrial park is worthy of recognition and validation as European heritage.
