Villa Domiziano is so called in honor of the emperor who had it built, Tito Flavio Domiziano known only as Domiziano.  He was the son of Vespasian and brother of Titus, also emperors.  Domitian was Roman emperor from 81 to 96 AD.  and in this period he restored the economy, strengthened the borders of the empire and waged important wars, especially in Britain and Dacia.  But Domitian believed himself a god, and he believed he was destined to lead the empire into an age of splendour.  He was generous to the people and the army but was considered a cruel and paranoid tyrant by the Senate.  In fact there was a conspiracy that led to his death and he was later condemned by the Senate to damnatio memoriae.
