Overview

Grandson asks his grandpa for a story. As the last carrier of knowledge of boatbuilding of extended dugout boats in Slovenia and Southern Europe, he invents a natural way to show his grandson how much is 10 000 years from ice age since a fir tree for the boat has survived. Prehistoric man of piledwellings has invented technique 8000 yrs ago. Grandpa is still using it nowadays. They started to WALK a traditional song for seven days. Young Guardians of Heritage from Estonia and Austria join them.

In the eye of a pike, a nail in the boat or how much is 10 000 – a boy and his grandpa in the boat
»Will you tell me a story ?« said hopefully the youngest grandson. His grandpa was an old man, but still in a very fit condition. You could secretly see twinkles in his eyes whenever his grandchildren would asked him for stories. But he didn't show that openly. Instead he would seriously turn to this grandson and asked him: »Have we done everything as we should? Are the vessels clean and the boat tied at the tree firmly?«  Grandson quickly checked his duties. »Yes! We did!«
»Than we can start our storytelling time!«
You could hear a deep relief and a sigh of expectation in a grandson's breathing.
The sun was setting and golden light was touching the surface of the lake and would send peacefull farewell of the day to the edges of the hills. Birds were setting to their nests singing. Wherever the eye would look around, there were some white clouds with pinky touch, brilliant blue sky and deep green forest.  Only a smell of a pike in the fisheman bag would reminded  us that humans are around and that time for dinner is close.
Grandpa would teach him about a fir tree that has survived the ice age that has finished 10 000 years ago. He still dugs a boat from a fir tree as a prehistorian man did. He WALKed 10 000 steps with a boy to cultivate a feeling in him for the space and time. Were prehistorian Slovene? asked a boy. Boatbuilding is a universal journey through cultures.

European Dimension

Digital era and technology is taking over our lives and young people  are connected Globally in virtual realities but at the same time allienated from each other, other cultures, religions and are illiteral in hands. We forgot the river. We do not know the way of the trees and birds anymore.  Old people still now how to survive in our region in organic way. In some places in Europe old techniques of boatbuilding are still found. In Slovenia we have the last active boatbuilder of extended dugout boats alive. We started educational program Young Guardians of Heritage which is a model of transition of knowledge and skills of intangible cultural heritage from old to young generation. At the same time we connected  experts from eu countries. With inspiring the young people for guarding the heritage the new movement for boatbuilding and blacksmithing in the region included unemployed young people, marginalised economic imigrants from ex Yugoslavia countries and forgotten old carriers of knowledge, other nationalities in the region were invited to bring their experiences. Diversity and similarities in our traditions enrich us. Taking a journey with a boat from a tree to the floating with the initiative of safeguarding traditional boatbuilding of extended dugout boat resounded in Austria's protected areas of piledwellings and Estonian movement for haabjas-logboat and oselvar protected boatbuilding in fjords. One boar one world one water one journey one humanity.
