Overview

In today’s Warsaw we can still find places related to the History of the May 3rd 1791 Constitution. The idea of the project is to tie them, on the 18th century city map, with Warsaw vedutas by Bernardo Bellotto Canaletto - Stanislaw August’s court artist and create QR-code marks explaining, in different languages, history and significance of the indicated sites/buildings. So far, there are 10 identified places to be pointed out.

The virtual trail will commemorate in the urban space places and people, including many foreigners, linked to the Constitution. It was adopted by Sejm at the Royal Castle. King Stanislaw August and Ignacy Potocki, leader of the “Patriotic Faction” were main authors of the Constitution and were supported, at the last stage, by Hugo Kołłątaj and Stanisław Małachowski, Marshal of the Sejm. The latest amendments to the text of Constitution were added in Czapski’s Palace at Krakowskie Przedmieście street – today Academy of Fine Arts. When Sejm passed the Constitution, the new law had to be printed and disseminated to general public. There were around 8 printing houses in Warsaw at that time. The most important were “privileged printing house and bookshop” owed by Michael Gröll (who moved from Saxony to Warsaw in 1759) – located at the corner of Senate street and Maryville, and the second one, owned by Kings Councillor Pierre Dufour (who moved from Paris in 1773) – located by the Old Market; the Free Printing House of Jan Potocki, on Rymarska street.
