To capture the true spirit of Budapest and discover the cultural treasures of “The Queen of the Danube”, one has to experience its history. This September, the Central European University’s (CEU) European Heritage Days tours take you to one of Budapest’s traditional neighbourhoods for a memorable journey to the city’s past!

On 16th and 17th September, CEU will organise free guided tours to showcase the heritage of Lipótváros, a historic neighbourhood in the city centre. Established in the early 19th century and later becoming home to the Parliament Building, Lipótváros embodies two centuries of Hungary's political and financial history.

The CEU European Heritage Days programme will look to unveil the history behind the neighbourhood's progress and the tours will be offered both in English and in Hungarian. This will be a chance to take an imaginary stroll in the twentieth-century Nador Street, learn more about the downtown Budapest architecture and explore the hidden heritage of Lipótváros.

Visitors are also invited to jazz and chamber music concerts at Nador 15 Café, where they can enjoy the traditional setting and extraordinary sounds of Budapest. This will be a unique opportunity to get to know the less known history of the neighbourhood and get immersed into the city’s vibrant culture.

This is the fifth year for the university to celebrate European Heritage Days and unveil the lesser known details of the city’s marvellous history, outstanding architecture and vivid culture. For the first time in 2017, some of the tours will be also be available in English to enable even more people to join.

For all the details about tour locations and times, visit the CEU announcement page. If you are looking to celebrate European Heritage Days beyond the capital, the programme for the 2017 events in Hungary is available here.
