With a history spanning over eight centuries, Roudnice nad Labem is a home to numerous architectural gems, cultural landmarks and ancient legends. Its early baroque chateau, 12th century castle and early 20th century steel road bridge are just some of the town’s emblems that tell the magnificent history of the town and the entire Bohemia.

Roudnice nad Labem is also a town of magnificent landscapes, numerous hiking trails and outdoors experiences that blend nature, myth and history in a wonderful way. Located on the left bank of the river Elbe and near the legendary Rip Mountain, the town is truly a gem of nature.

The vicinity of the Rip Mountain also made the town known for its association with the story of Praotec Čech, the founder of the first Slavic settlement in Bohemia. Widely known across the country, the legend of Praotec Čech bringing the first Czech people to the area has established Roudnice nad Labem as a unique spot for the explorers of Czech history and heritage. The myth also brings back the authentic spirit of ancient times, making any exploratory activity in Roudnice nad Labem truly unique.

During European Heritage Days 2017, a number of such activities will be organised free of charge to highlight the town's traditional architecture, marvellous nature and typical culture. Through a series of events and guided tours at some of the town’s iconic landmarks, visitors will be able to go on a “date with history” and gain some knowledge about their past.

Among the sites that will be open to European Heritage Days visitors, Roudnice Chateau, Roudnice stone castle with watchtower and Chapel Joseph will offer free guided tours to present their magnificent histories. In addition to these, Gallery of Modern Art and Podřipské Museum will offer new insights about the Czech art and culture, while the Church of the birth of the Virgin Mary will also be open to welcome visitors interested in finding out more about the architectural and religious heritage of the town.

Every year, European Heritage Days in the Czech Republic offer an opportunity to learn something new, try something different and enjoy the authenticity of the national culture. With its unique offer of heritage sites and nature, Roudnice Nad Labem will contribute to the enrichment of this annual celebration that will take place on 9th September, 2017.
