From the lost heritage to the exceptional collection of art. Remarkable destiny of significant collection in the middle Europe.
Count Ján XIV Pálffy was one of the richest people in Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and very important private collector of art as well. His collection was of a pan-European character, because his extraordinary collect effort makes it bigger than local conditions. Count Ján Pálffy owned many residences in Wien, Budapest, Paris, Bratislava and Kráľová pri Senci, which were used for depositing his collections. Some of them he had to rebuild. The most extensive neogothic rebuild was done in Bojnice. As models, he used French and Tyrolean castles as Amboise, Pierrefonds, Carcassonne, Perpignan, Merano, and Kreuzenstein. In his testament, he left his collection and buildings arranged as museums for the state. His relatives did not accept the testament and they sold all of the collections and buildings. Objects from Pallfy´s collections are situated not only in Slovak museums, but also in museums and galleries all over the Europe and USA.

In his collection, we can find sculptures, applied art objects and also paintings of the significant artists like Tizian, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, Giovanni Bellini, Lucas Cranach the elder, Antonius van Dyck, etc. In his testament, he left his collection and buildings arranged as museums for the state. His relatives did not accept the testament and they sold all of the collections and buildings. Count Ján Pálffy owned many residences in Wien, Budapest, Paris, Bratislava and Kráľová pri Senci, which was used for depositing his collections. Some of them he had to rebuild. Publication about personality and collections of Count Ján XIV Pálffy will be published as the result of the research done by Mgr. Katarína Malečková. The book will be surveying not only count’s life and destiny, but also his magnificent art collection and large building effort - Bojnice Castle. In this publication Count Ján XIV Pálffy will be presented as a collector, philanthropist and builder. Objects from Pallfy´s collection are situated not only in Slovak museums, but also in museums and galleries all over the Europe and USA. In 2019 we commemorate 190th anniversary of the birth of Count Ján XIV Pálffy. On this occasion the scientific conference „Familia Pálffy“ will be held on 25th September 2019 at Bojnice Castle, the seat of the Slovak National Museum – Bojnice Castle Museum, as well as the part of European Heritage Days. Count Ján XIV Pálffy presented European history of architectural heritage through his collecting and rebuilding activities. He collected art objects all around the world and therefore his collection was very important in the worldwide context. Architecture of European castles, like gothic castles in France and Tyrol, Renaissance castles in Italy, were inspirations for Count Pálffy during the rebuilding of Bojnice Castle. The research, what is surveying original art collection of Count Pálffy and its parts situated in European museums, can significantly help to knowing of his collections provenance.
