Из летописей известно, что "…в 1414 году великий князь литовский Витовт из Дриссы двинулся с войском против псковитян и, подойдя к Псковскому пригороду Себежу, взял его и сжег, а сам двинулся далее". Поскольку родник находится у дороги, которая здесь была не одно столетие, то Витовт вполне мог тут останавливаться. Среди местных жителей широко распространена легенда, почему этот родник называется Витовтов Ключ: «Шел литовский князь Витовт со своими воинами, долго шел. Все измучились и хотели пить, а кругом один лес и никаких признаков воды. Остановились на привал, и тогда Витовт ударил со злости мечом в землю, и забил оттуда родник». В другом варианте легенды говорится так же о том, что Витовт был ранен, но после того как он омыл раны водой из этого родника, они быстро зажили.
