Brown’s Square lies just over half a mile from Belfast City Hall.  It’s history stretches back to the Ice Age and was formally named after Captain John Brown who was given the square by Lord Donegall. Brown’s Square is historically unique in that it was the home of the United Irishmen during the 1798 rebellion yet it became a bastion of Protestant Loyalism second only to Sandy Row.  It was the place where the religious segregation of schools and inner-city housing began and was at the epicentre of the 1920/21 ‘Troubles.’ It was where the first ‘peaceline’s’ were created and still stand today, serving the same purpose. During the last ‘Troubles’ it was the haunt of the Shankill Butchers and also targeted by the PIRA, yet the area has survived and indeed thrived.

The story is told on this historical walking tour by professional tour guide and citizen of Brown’s Square Francis Higgins MA. Tours last approx 40 mins with around one mile of leisurely walking.
